Does Medicare Cover Annual Physicals?

by All Medicare, posted November 3, 2022

You might be wondering if Medicare covers annual physical exams. The answer depends on the type of exam performed. An annual physical can include many medical procedures, including cancer screening. This may include a pap smear for cervical cancer, a mammogram for breast cancer, and a prostate exam. These exams are different for each patient, and they will vary depending on the person’s needs.

Medicare Yearly Wellness visits

Original Medicare does not pay for annual physicals, however, some Medicare Advantage plans do. This means that you are responsible for the costs of these appointments, and if you are unable to afford them, you could be on the hook for the entire cost. An annual physical is a routine checkup, usually performed by a doctor, during which you have blood work and other tests performed. The doctor performs these exams to ensure your health and well-being.

There are two main types of physical exams that Medicare covers: the annual physical and the wellness visit. Each is different, and your provider should let you know what is covered for each. You should also know what your Medicare plan covers, as some may not.

Does Medicare cover lab work for a physical?

Lab work is an important part of an annual physical, and Medicare covers many types of tests. These include screening tests such as urinalysis and hepatitis testing. They also cover pap smears, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests, and more. Some of these tests are covered on a regular schedule, while others can be ordered by your doctor. These tests can be helpful in helping your doctor determine if you are at risk of developing certain diseases or conditions, and they can help your doctor determine how well a treatment is working.

If you are in the process of getting a new physical, make sure you understand all of the coverage details. Some tests may not be covered, and you may have to pay the rest. However, if your annual physical is covered by your insurance, you can avoid paying out-of-pocket for the services. If you have Medicare, make sure you talk to your doctor before getting a physical. If you have a supplementary insurance plan, you may be able to get the lab work covered through that plan. However, if you do not have the option to use Medicare, you may need to pay out-of-pocket for this service.

Why Medicare Doesn’t Cover an Annual Physical Exam

Last September, Betty Myers called her primary care doctor and thought Medicare would cover the bill for her annual physical exam. However, she was surprised to get a bill for over $400. She thought it was an error and called the office to ask about it. When the doctor explained that Medicare does not cover annual physical exams, she was shocked and upset.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services states that an annual physical exam isn’t covered by Medicare. The cost of the service is usually the responsibility of the patient, but some supplemental health insurance plans will cover it in full. If you’re not sure whether Medicare covers your annual physical exam, you can ask your doctor for more information about the benefits of each type of plan.

While the annual physical exam was introduced in 2011, only 16% of Medicare beneficiaries actually received one in 2014. The low rate is likely due to a variety of reasons, including confusion about Medicare’s rules, difficulties collecting balances from patients, and billing errors that delay Medicare reimbursement.
