Grand Isle County, VT
Medicare Advantage Information

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are the private health plan alternative to Original Medicare. Grand Isle County residents have a total of 16 MA plans available. Plans are provided by Medicare-approved, private companies. Also known as Medicare Part C, MA plans offer additional benefits that are not available through Original Medicare.

Some Medicare Advantage plans include prescription medication coverage (Part D). These plans, also known as Medicare Advantage Prescription drug plans (or MAPDs), offer comprehensive coverage for people who need to lower their out-of-pocket costs.

3 Plan Types Available

Medicare Advantage offers a variety of plan types. This is one of its many benefits. HMO and PPO are two of the most popular types of plans. But there are others. Although not all plans are available in every area, people on Medicare in Grand Isle County can choose from 3 plan options.

Plan TypeDescription
HMO

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) members usually receive services through the plan’s local network of providers. Referrals are typically required to see a specialist and other providers. However, plans allow out-of-network care for emergencies and out-of-area dialysis. Prescription drug coverage is often included in HMO plans, and many plans include some coverage for dental, vison, and hearing.

PPO

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) members can usually use in-network and out-of-network providers for care, including hospitalization. However, visits to non-network providers could cost significantly more. PPO plans often include prescription drug coverage and other benefits, and referrals are typically not required for specialist visits.

HMO-POS

An HMO-POS (point-of-sale) plan offers the same features as an HMO plan. There is however one major difference. HMO-POS plans allow members to access healthcare providers outside of the plan's network to receive some or all of their services. In most cases, to go out of the plan's network a member will need to get a referral from their physician. Plus, there are separate deductibles for in-network and out-of-network services.

SNP

Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are highly specialized and you must be qualified to join. For this reason, All Medicare organizes Medicare Advantage Special Needs plans for Grand Isle County, Vermont residents in their own directory.

Getting Medicare Part D with Medicare Advantage

A Medicare prescription drug plan, also known as a PDP or a Part D plan, may be available to some people. The Medicare Part D plans available in Vermont provide coverage for prescription drugs. Beneficiaries with Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan can get a stand-alone Part D plan for prescription coverage.

Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medicare Advantage is only one option. Many people in a Grand Isle County think that Medicare Advantage plans can be too expensive or restrictive. Some of these people choose to keep their Original Medicare benefits and get more coverage with Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap).

If you're not familiar with Medicare Supplements, and how they protect you from Original Medicare's high out-of-pocket costs, have a look at our Medicare Supplement directory. We make it easy for you to compare plans and costs. All Medicare Supplement plans are standardized in Vermont, which makes choosing a plan easier.

Medicare Advantage Plan Availability

The MA and MAPD plans listed on this page are available to individuals enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B who reside in Alburgh, Grand Isle, South Hero, and all other areas of Grand Isle County, Vermont.

Individuals who are institutionalized, have a severe chronic illness, or have special financial needs are encouraged to look into the 2023 Medicare SNP Plans in Grand Isle County, Vermont.
